BOT Spends Sh2.5 Billion On Two Houses

Dec 31, 2009 (The Citizen/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) yesterday confirmed that it had constructed two new houses for its top two executives at the cost of more than Sh2.5 billion.

A statement issued by BoT yesterday stated further that a residential house for one of its deputy governors was being refurbished.

The newly constructed houses are for governor Prof Benno Ndulu and one of his three deputies, BoT said "Both Governor Ndulu and Deputy Governor Lila Mkila, who were living in rented houses have moved to the new Bank of Tanzania official residences.

The Governor moved to house No. 12 Tumbawe Road on 17th December 2009 and Deputy Governor Mkila to house No. 57 Mtwara Crescent on 4th December 2009," said the statement released by BoT yesterday.

The clarification came following media reports which indicated that the central bank had constructed a new house for its boss at more than Sh1.4 billion.

But according to BoT, the bank's top executives "are entitled to official residences provided by the employer".

The Bank used to have only two executive officers: the governor and one deputy governor, who used to live in BoT houses along Mahando Street and Msese Road respectively.

However, as a result of the changes made through Bank of Tanzania Act, 2006, the Bank introduced new executive posts, bringing the number of top bosses to four.

BoT said that before the appointment of the current office bearers in 2006, BoT had decided to construct the two executive houses.

A team of consultants led by M/S SKY Architects was engaged to provide schematic drawings that were reviewed by the Bank and two of these (one for each plot) was selected for detailed design stage.

"It is important for the public to know that the planning and decision to have these houses constructed was done before Prof Ndulu's appointment," said BoT in the statement issued by the Public Relations and Protocol Department.

As a result of the process, M/s Electrics International Co. Limited was awarded a tender to construct the house along Tumbawe Road at the cost of Sh1,274,295,025.26.

Likewise, for house no. 57 Mtwara Crescent, M/s Holtan Builders Ltd was awarded the tender at the cost of Sh1,272,348,512.00 and was given 24 weeks to complete the work.
