Shenzhen to Build National Super Computer Center

SHENZHEN, Jun 05, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Shenzhen will build a national super computer center with CNY 200 million before the end of 2010. A super computer with a calculation speed of one petaflop will be deployed in the center, equivalent to more than 200,000 ordinary laptops.

On May 9, 2009, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) consented the construction of the Shenzhen super computer center. On June 4, the local government held a press conference, saying that the center will provide stronger technology support for scientific and technological resource sharing and information exchange among Southern China, Hong Kong, and Macao.

The setup of the center will bolster up the technology innovation cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, because most of the local colleges and universities use super computers in their basic research, pointed out Xu Qin, vice mayor of Shenzhen. Research institutes and companies in Hong Kong will be encouraged to participate in the development of the super computer technology.

The building of the center will support the data sharing and coordination among Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, boosting industrial upgrade. For example, the development of the LED industry needs super computers for the calculation of heat elimination, said Gong Jianping, director of the CAS Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology.
