La Crosse Municipal Airport adds services

(La Crosse Tribune (Wisconsin) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mar. 25--The number of people using La Crosse Municipal Airport has declined significantly this year, the airport manager said Tuesday.

The airport has seen a 21 percent drop in passenger numbers this quarter compared with the same period in 2008, Dan Wruck said.

"The major impact on traffic right now is the economy," Wruck said. "When it starts to turn around, our traffic will turn around." American Eagle will add a fifth flight April 7 from La Crosse to Chicago, and Delta Air Lines will offer a daily direct flight to Detroit starting June 5. With the additions, the La Crosse airport will have 11 arrivals and 11 departures each day.

The changes, Wruck said, could boost numbers at the airport.

"We were really fortunate to see an increase in the air service, especially in a down market like this," Wruck said.

"It is very important for the public to support the market. When they make travel arrangements, they need to look at traveling out of La Crosse first," he said. "Airlines that don't get that market share won't continue to serve the community." A number of travelers requested a Detroit flight out of La Crosse, and Wruck is optimistic the route will prove popular.

WHAT'S NEW: Delta Air Lines The merger of Northwest Airlines with Delta Air Lines has brought a new backdrop and signs to the airport's check-in counter. The changes were completed last week, airport manager Dan Wruck said. Travelers flying Northwest will need to go to the Delta counter, he said.

WHAT'S NEW: Cell phone waiting lot The La Crosse Municipal Airport has added a cell phone waiting lot for those picking up passengers. As with larger airports, the lot provides free parking where people can wait until passengers call saying they've arrived, said Dan Wruck, airport manager. The new area will provide an alternative to parking in front of the terminal, which is prohibited for security reasons, Wruck said.
