Changhong Develops Apollo IMIANYANG, Oct 30, 2008 (SinoCast China IT Watch via COMTEX) -- Panovasic Technology Co., Ltd. affiliated to Sichuan Changhong Group has successfully developed Chinese proprietary system on chip (SoC) named Apollo I. The development of SoC signals that Changhong's IC and embedded software design technologies has become state-of-the- art around the world. Realizing that the core technologies and added value of household appliances will shift from complete sets to key components and software with the popularization of digital technology, Changhong has taken actions long before. Through Apollo I, together with the company's PDP display screen, organic light emitting diode display (OLED), and compressor, the Chinese leading household appliance maker extends its reaches to upstream key components and software. SoC is a single IC (chip) integrating all components of a computer functioning like CPU. It is widely used in portable media player, mobile TV, smart mobile phone, digital photo frame, online digital broadcast, videophone, auto-borne entertainment, and GPS. In the future, Changhong will kick off chip research and development in three fields. It will continue developing new versions of Apollo series, and gear up in mobile multimedia applications; foray into the digital display market, develop main ships for its HD digital TV products; and research on family digital main ships, and prepare for future 3C consolidation. After its continued Apollo products are combined with household appliances and communication products, the company will have larger IC industrial clusters, and stronger innovation capacity in every field, and form four-core competitiveness, namely, IC design, embedded software design, industrial design, and engineering technology. In terms of embedded software design, Changhong has two top-flight R&D teams, and advanced software platform. Its software strengths include embedded browser, broadband video terminal, IPTV set-top box, embedded family media center, and mobile digital TV terminal. SoC makes Changhong the developer as well as the user of IC products, help the 3C giant better improve the performance of complete sets, and strengthen its competitiveness among household appliance makers. Moreover, the product will break the monopoly of foreign brands over PDP and OLED technologies in the Chinese market. Meanwhile, Changhong's first PDP module production line with a total investment of USD 675 million has been put into production; China's first proprietary OLED production line built by Changhong has started in 2008, designed to have an annual production capacity of 12 million pieces; and its air conditioner compressor affiliate will become the first alike company in the southwest region.
