Missing Venezuelan cargo plane's wreckage found in Ecuador

(EFE Ingles Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Quito, Aug 31 (EFE).- Search teams spotted the wreckage Sunday of a Venezuelan cargo plane that was missing in central Ecuador, a Red Cross official told Efe.

A section of the plane was seen by rescue workers on a high plateau between the towns of Sigchos and Toacaso, located at the foot of Mount Illiniza Sur, located some 80 kilometers (about 50 miles) south of Quito in Cotopaxi province.

Rescue workers, however, have not yet been able to reach the crash site because of bad weather in the area, the Red Cross official said.

More than 200 police, military personnel, Red Cross workers and firefighters were deployed to search for the missing cargo plane in Ecuador's central Andean region.

DAC civil aviation agency director Jorge Zurita said in a press conference Sunday that the cargo plane disappeared minutes before it was scheduled to land at the airport in the Andean city of Latacunga, the capital of Cotopaxi, located 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of Quito.

Zurita said the plane's pilot radioed the control tower in Latacunga at 8:56 p.m. Saturday to say he was preparing to make a turn to approach the runway.

The control tower lost radio contact with the Conviasa cargo company's Boeing 737-300 six minutes later and the aircraft disappeared from radar screens.

The plane, which was carrying a pilot, co-pilot and mechanic, was flying to Latacunga from Caracas. EFE
