DIGITAL ALLIANCE FOUNDATION TO BRING COMPUTER SKILLS TO THE MARGINALISED

(Bernama The Malaysian National News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) from BERNAMA, The Malaysian National News Agency KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 (Bernama) -- The Digital Alliance Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing vocational skills, today announced that it would come out with a programme to bring computer skills to marginalised populations around the world

The foundation said the programme, formed through a strategic partnership with the private sector, individuals and organisations, would enable them to mobilise resources and know-how to those in need through the existing aid organisations around the world

"Digital Alliance is more about people and education than wires and softwares," the founder of Digital Alliance, Martha Branigan-Sutton, said in a statement

She said through the programme, the foundation aimed to train one million marginalised people by 2017 under the recently announced Clinton Global Initiative

"The programme will be coordinated by an organisation under the United Nations -- the Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development (GAID)," she added

Meanwhile, GAID executive coordinator Sarbuland Khan said the programme was approved by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2006 and was launched after comprehensive worldwide consultations with governments, the private sector, civil societies, technical and Internet communities and academia

"We realise that no single actor is capable of achieving the Millennium Development Goals in isolation. The creation of an open and inclusive platform that can broaden the dialogue on innovative ways of harnessing ICT for advancing development is crucial," she said in the same statement
