Vanu and Globecomm Systems Team Up to Create a High Performance, Low Cost Solution for Wireless Rural Operators

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. $ HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. --(Business Wire)-- Vanu(R), Inc., the leading software radio innovator for the wireless infrastructure industry, and Globecomm Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: GCOM), a worldwide provider of end-to-end, cellular and satellite-based communications, today announced a joint solution designed to bring a turnkey, multi-standard wireless offering to rural wireless operators. The Vanu/Globecomm solution enables carriers to simultaneously support both GSM and CDMA from a hosted switch service so that operators don't have to invest in a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) nor will they have to replicate radio access network (RAN) hardware for each new technology they add to their service offering.

The two companies are collaborating to provide rural operators with a solution that minimizes upfront capital expenditures by making Globecomm's SatCell HST hosted switch solution available to each carrier. The economics of this offering are only further enhanced by Vanu's Anywave(R) software radio technology which enables new wireless standards and system capacity to be added via remote software downloads, thereby eliminating numerous, costly cell site field service visits. The combined solution also allows operators to accelerate time-to-market for new services while taking advantage of lower cost IP-based backhaul, decreased real estate and utility expense, and ongoing operating expense reductions associated with remote monitoring capabilities. The companies also deliver full turnkey implementation from system test to installation, commercial deployment and 24/7 support services for all hardware and software components.

The increased emergence of new wireless standards and additional spectrum has caused nationwide carriers to quicken the pace at which they introduce new technologies, some of which are not supported by many rural operators today. This in turn forces these smaller carriers to make an expensive choice: bear the cost of building a unique network for each new wireless standard or forego further infrastructure investment and risk losing existing subscribers and incremental roaming revenue. The Vanu/Globecomm solution makes this a very affordable and highly flexible investment that optimizes the network today and for future expansion.

"Through the combined efforts of Globecomm Systems and Vanu, we will provide rural carriers with an opportunity to expand their networks and customer base - as well as their revenues - without the tremendous costs associated with building new networks, or replacing existing networks, to support ever-changing communications standards," said John Winn, Executive VP of Sales and Marketing at Vanu. "Both of our organizations are committed to focus on what we do best, provide leading-edge technology, first-class service support and economic infrastructure solutions that are sensitive to the business needs of the rural operator. For a smaller carrier, this is a winning combination."

"At Globecomm Systems, we will focus on the hardware and hosted switching service, while Vanu will continue to deliver 'industry first' advantages to the carrier through its software radio solution," said Steve Yablonski, VP of Sales and Marketing with Globecomm. "Combined, our innovative technologies and philosophies for customer support, will give smaller carriers the edge in the ever-changing wireless marketplace. By offering multiple standards on a single platform with a cost-effective hosted MSC service, rural carriers can easily keep pace with new technology offerings, while increasing their roaming agreements to earn additional roaming revenues in the process. At the same time, running multiple software-based technologies in a single rack of equipment means a smaller footprint, fewer maintenance issues and an economic path to the future- all critical benefits for rural operators."

Both Vanu and Globecomm Systems will be exhibiting at the Rural Cellular Associations (RCA) 2007 Annual Convention, April 10-13, at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada. Vanu (Booth 209) will demonstrate simultaneous operation of GSM and CDMA in a single base station, single network configuration, as well as other advances in software radio.

Globecomm Systems (Booth 305) will display technology that allows them to integrate satellites into network applications in order to provide high-quality connections to the edge of the network, broadcast one-to-many, and support bandwidth-hungry applications.

About Vanu, Inc.

Vanu, Inc. is the developer of the Anywave(R) Base Station, the first U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-certified software radio. The Anywave Base Station provides significant advantages over traditional equipment designs including: simultaneous operation of multiple wireless standards on a single platform, the use of high volume, high performance servers rather than custom processing hardware; remote software downloads to add system capacity and migrate to future standards; decreased backhaul costs and a full range of additional capital and operating cost savings. These benefits come from implementing the high speed signal processing functions of the base station as a portable software application running on Linux, eliminating the need for specialized signal processing hardware. The company delivers Anywave radio access network solutions, licenses its software, and provides design consulting to service providers, system integrators and wireless OEMs. Vanu was founded in 1998 and is based in Cambridge, Mass. www.vanu.com
