YouTube to Debut on Verizon Wireless Phones

Despite the fact that a small percentage of users utilize video on mobile phones, the concept is a growing trend that Verizon (News - Alert) is looking to expand upon. In an effort to boost its V CAST subscriptions, the wireless giant will incorporate YouTube with its service offerings in December.

According to Kagan Research, this is no surprise.  “We have been speculating this would happen for the last few weeks. Launching in December will help Verizon Wireless during the biggest month of the year for the wireless business,” said Jeff Kagan, telecom industry analyst for Kagan Research in an e-mail statement.

YouTube will deliver samples of its most popular videos to Verizon Wireless V CAST subscribers with a V CAST enabled handset. The most popular models include Chocolate (LG VX8500) and MOTOKRZR K1m.
Kagan officials also noted that consumers are looking for handsets that have multiple features, an all-in-one device. The move to offer YouTube videos targets the younger consumer market, allowing them to do view what they normally would at home while on the go.
Verizon Wireless customers can purchase a V CAST VPak subscription for $15.00 monthly access, or $3.00 daily access which includes unlimited basic video.
Earlier this month, Google’s (News - Alert) acquisition of YouTube officially closed. YouTube remains independently operated and will keep the YouTube name next to Google Video.
“This should be a big story for Verizon Wireless, YouTube and Google,” said Kagan.
The agreement is exclusive to Verizon Wireless customers and will be offered for a limited time only.
