TV Sales Rise, Slim Chances for HDTV Before 2012

(Polish News Bulletin Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) The World Cup in Germany is proving particularly beneficial for Polish TV dealers. So far in June retail chains carrying TV equipment have experienced over ten-percent turnover growth. Additionally, viewers are becoming more interested in HDTV (High Definition Television) and LCD TV products. However, unlike in Germany or France, Polish broadcasters are reluctant to engage in such projects due to the high costs and small number of potential users. Given that the EU has obliged member states to introduce digital television by 2013, viewers in Poland will probably have to wait for HDTV until 2012. Deputy Culture Minister Jaroslaw Sellin hinted that the state will not press broadcasters to switch from analogue to digital TV earlier. Sellin argued that the situation is similar in other EU member states. The change will force viewers using older TV sets to purchase new TV equipment.
