U.A.E.: RCS offers aid in Azerbaijan, Iraq


(The Emirates Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)from THE EMIRATES, February 25, 2006 The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has offered Dh 150,000 in support of the Gulf Autism Centre. Mohammed Habroush Al Rumaithi, Deputy Secretary General for Local Affairs, said "the donation is part of the society's effort to support centres for people with special needs to enable them assume their important humanitarian mission properly



Deputy Director of the Centre Mariam Al Mazrouei thanked the RCS for its generous support. The centre was set up last year. Meanwhile, the RCS has received donations offered by students of the American School in Abu Dhabi to relieve earthquake-victims in Pakistan

In Azerbaijan, the society distributed today food supplies, blankets, heaters and other relief items to ten camps for displaced and homeless people in Akdam city. Saleh Mohammed Al Mua'lla, Deputy Secretary General for Relief said these camps house over 150,000 people


A top Azeri official hailed efforts being made by the UAE to extend humanitarian assistance to Azeri displaced people. 'These assistance will help ease suffering of the affected people," he added. An orphanage in Baku also received 110 food parcels. In Iraq, the RCS gave away 1300 food parcels to needy population in a number of provinces in Iraq
