Japanese right-hander Yusaku Iriki has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the New York Mets, the major league club said Wednesday.

Iriki, 33, was released by the Nippon Ham Fighters last month.

He failed to draw any bids from major league teams in November through the posting system, in which they present sealed bids to Japanese teams to acquire players. He later became a free agent to have a chance for a switch to the major leagues this offseason.

Iriki has a 35-35 career record with three saves and a 3.75 ERA. In the 2005 season, he was 6-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 games.
