Drug Infusion System and Delivery Method Patent Granted to ISSYS

YPSILANTI, Mich. --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 20, 2005 -- Integrated Sensing Systems, Inc. (ISSYS) announced that the U.S. Patent Office has granted it a utility patent (US 6,932,114) entitled "Fluid Delivery System and Method." This patent describes both a new drug infusion system and method of drug delivery that employs Coriolis mass flow sensors to both control and monitor the delivery of one or more drugs to a patient. With 30 claims, including features such as bubble detection and flow rate measurement, this patent broadly applies to intravenous, intra-arterial, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal and intrathecal medication delivery.

Dr. Nader Najafi, President and CEO of ISSYS stated that, "The new technology has a proven track record of industrial use and ISSYS is building up great IP protection with a strong patent portfolio. This patent is of paramount importance since it covers a variety of associated applications, while ISSYS' previous patents cover the technology and manufacturing features. The first infusion product is currently under consideration at the FDA for approval."

Dr. Douglas Sparks, Executive VP of ISSYS stated that, "The system and novel method will greatly improve the safety of drug delivery. Each year thousands of people die or are injured in the US due to drug delivery errors. The system that ISSYS has developed, based on the patent, can greatly reduce the number of errors seen during drug delivery by monitoring the drug dose, dose rate, volume, drug type and concentration. It can also detect occlusions or blockages in the IV line and sense air bubbles. Never before has a single microsensor been able to provide the patient with so much protection. This patent reinforces the other ISSYS patents on the design, packaging, fabrication and application of microtube-based sensors, giving ISSYS comprehensive IP protection and offering a competitive barrier to market entry."
