Endwave Modules Used in First Commercial Deployment of a 70/80 GHz Gigabit Radio Link

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Endwave Corporation , a leading provider of high-frequency RF modules for telecommunications networks, defense electronics and homeland security systems, today announced the receipt of initial purchase orders from GigaBeam Corporation (BULLETIN BOARD: GGBM) . The first deliveries against these orders for Endwave synthesizers and frequency multipliers have been successfully qualified and installed into GigaBeam's WiFiber(TM) communication links, and subsequently deployed into the field. The first of these links is already in operation in downtown Manhattan to enable residents in the 49-story Trump Place to receive fiber-equivalent access, including quadruple-play services: high-speed data (wired and wireless), voice/video over IP, high-definition TV and video-on-demand services. This deployment represents the first commercial radio deployment in the world of a Gigabit speed link utilizing 70 and 80 GHz, commonly referred to as "E-Band". In late 2003, the Federal Communications Commission authorized use of the 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz bands for wireless point-to-point commercial use after lobbying by Endwave and GigaBeam founders.

GigaBeam's WiFiber(TM) is an E-Band point-to-point wireless solution that currently provides ultra high-speed communications at 1.25 Gigabits-per-second -- equivalent to 647 T1 lines or 1,000 DSL connections. Endwave's hardware provides the critical low-noise source generation and subsequent frequency multiplication to the high frequencies, enabling the transmit and receive portions of the WiFiber(TM) radio to function effectively at these Gigabit data rates.
E-Band radio links offer a compelling alternative to terrestrial fiber optic cable in a variety of potential commercial, military, and government end-use applications. These include ubiquitous high-speed networks for business and campus environments; Virtual Private Networks (VPNs); Carrier loop diversity and disaster recovery from a central office to large office buildings, as well as cable operators (MSOs) routing commercial Ethernet to extend coverage out to large building complexes; high-data rate backhaul for cellular, WiMax, and WISP (wireless internet service provider) operators; HDTV signal routing; and other fiber substitution applications. The advantages of wireless E-Band links versus wired fiber-optic solutions include substantially lower deployments costs, deployment speeds that are measured in days (rather than months, or even a year for fiber), and eased regulatory and environmental approvals.
Ed Keible, President and CEO of Endwave stated, "We are very proud to participate in GigaBeam's achievement of this historic milestone. As these high millimeter-wave frequencies demand innovative technology solutions and the precision and repeatability of automated manufacturing, Endwave's expertise in both makes us uniquely positioned to serve as the leading subsystem supplier to E-Band radio OEMs."
Louis Slaughter, Chairman and CEO of GigaBeam added, "Endwave has a long history as one of the pioneers in the millimeter-wave industry. As new market applications of E-Band continue to unfold, we see Endwave as a valuable partner who has been instrumental in the commercialization of other high-frequency markets through their engineering and manufacturing leadership. It is particularly gratifying to us that Doug Lockie, the Founder of Endgate (which later became Endwave) and the Co-Founder of GigaBeam, has had such a profound influence on two companies that have collaborated on this first commercial E-Band deployment."
