City of Oceanside Deploys Proxim Tsunami Products for Community Wireless Broadband Network SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Proxim Corporation , a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and broadband wireless networks, today announced that its Tsunami broadband wireless products are being used as the foundation for The City of Oceanside, California's new metro area wireless network. The new network, which links all of Oceanside's major facilities including City Hall, its fire and police departments, and water and harbor facilities, has saved the City approximately $150,000 per year, while enabling users across the network to access voice, data and video applications quickly and reliably.Since deploying the new network, the City of Oceanside has achieved substantial cost-savings of $150,000 per year and will essentially be able to pay for the network in less than three years. These cost savings are based on the new network's lower operating costs and the elimination of the leased line monthly fees. Like many communities across the nation, the City of Oceanside has experienced tremendous growth that was simply not being accommodated by our existing infrastructure, said Michael Sherwood, Chief Information Officer, City of Oceanside. We looked at several options for expanding our network, but they were all cost-prohibitive. Working with our VAR, Sun Wireless, we were able to design a broadband wireless network without recurring monthly fees that fit into our budget. Using the Proxim Tsunami point-to-point radios, the new network meets our existing requirements and accommodates future growth, while dramatically lowering our costs. The new network has surpassed our expectations for cost reduction and can be easily expanded as our community grows. From a technology perspective, the City of Oceanside's wireless network is innovative, with several repeater sites that cross portions of the Pacific Ocean and a 12-mile hop that uses antennas that are only four feet high. Al Pfeltz, Cofounder of Sun Wireless, the VAR that managed the City of Oceanside's network deployment, commented, The City of Oceanside network was a challenging and unique design, but we never lost track of the City's key objectives: reliability, cost savings and the ability to accommodate future growth. With these objectives in mind, we recommended Proxim products as the foundation of the network because of the breadth of point-to-point radios available, the high quality and reliability of the products and the possibility for substantial cost savings. The Proxim products made it easy for us to install an innovative wireless network that met all the City's key criteria.
