Thundercomm Introduces Stand-alone Virtual Reality Head-mounted Displays Platform, the TurboX VR DK1, Powered by the New Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- At Mobile World Congress 2017 (MWC), Thundercomm, the world-leading IoT solutions provider, has introduced their stand-alone virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) Platform, the TurboX™ VR DK1, which is based on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 mobile platform. Thundercomm is committed to technological innovation and the development of the Snapdragon-supported TurboX™ Smart Core Platform, an open platform for intelligent hardware products, which includes System on Module's (SOM's), operating system platforms, software development kitsand application layer technology optimization. The complete VR platform will meet the complicated and high product technology standards and quality delivery requirements of the VR field, and will accelerate the development of VR products and enable quicker commercialization opportunities for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

The launch of this new HMD is part of a greater initiative by Thundercomm and Qualcomm Technologies, deemed the "HMD Accelerator Program." Designed as a catalyst for OEMs that are focused on creating a virtual reality HMD of their own. OEMs will have access to reference design products and will be able to choose from a pre-qualified set of components, including the Thundercomm VR HMD reference platform with Snapdragon 835.

Combined with the latest Snapdragon VRDK V2.0, the TurboX™ VR DK1 carries out a full range of upgrades with own-developed technology. The new platform takes advantage of up to 1,000Hz sensor fusion algorithm, a high-performance OLED screen and the new ASW algorithm to reduce system latency to 15ms or less, which will significantly weaken the sense of vertigo. In order to enhance the sense of immersion, a new 3D audio applies to TurboX™ VR DK1, which achieves a full range of audio-visual immersion. In the interactive experience, there is a more accurate fully-integrated inside-out stereo 6DOF tracking program. At the same time, while delivering leading VR feature performance, the combined solution has made huge strides in system and platform heat dissipation. With the support of the new 10nm process, and the use of new eye tracking technology, it achieves the foveated rendering algorithm which effectively reduces the power consumption of the game scene, and combined with the whole system of efficient thermal design, the VR experience can be really quiet and cool.

The Snapdragon 835 is the latest and most prominent in a series of high performance mobile platforms from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. When compared to previous generations, the Snapdragon 835 is architected to take advantage of higher power efficiency, increased performance, longer battery life, and slimmer device size. This is ideal for manufacturers racing to meet demand for products that are designed to deliver the next generation of connectivity-rich user experiences. By combining a Qualcomm® Kryo™ 280 CPU with Qualcomm Technologies' many additional low power, high-performance processing technologies together, Snapdragon 835 is engineered to provide an extraordinary battery life for user experiences such as AR and VR, listening to high fidelity audio, watching HD video, playing games, and using the camera/camcorder. As an Ultra HD Premium mobile processor, Snapdragon 835 is designed to support full 4K/60fps, 10-bit HDR10/HEVC video decoding, HDR graphics rendering and display directly to wide color gamut 10-bit 4K displays. The utilization of the Snapdragon 835 mobile platform is engineered to bring great benefits to its users.

Thundercomm's HMD platform has been selected as the key platform associated with the newly-launched Qualcomm Technologies HMD Accelerator Program. Together with Qualcomm Technologies, Thundercomm will support quick commercialization and high quality for OEM customers, along with scalability and harmonization for VR content developers.

"Thundercomm has great advantages in the fields of chips and operating systems. Focused on providing end-to-end intelligent hardware solutions to ODM/OEMs, Thundercomm is an expert in system optimization, sensor fusion, low latency, distortion correction, and more," said Larry Geng, Chairman of Thundercomm. "I believe the successful launch of the TurboX™ VR DK1 reference platform will bring huge opportunities to start-ups and accelerate the development of the VR industry."

"We have a strong relationship with Thundercomm in non-smartphone segments using Snapdragon, and it is exciting to extend the effort to VR with their software, module and standalone HMD as part of the HMD Accelerator Program," said Hugo Swart, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "The TuboX VR DK1 will be a powerful tool for OEMs and the rest of the ecosystem to support quick time-to-production of high quality products."
