Synthetaic Founder and CEO, Corey Jaskolski, Named Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year

Today, the National Geographic Society announced Corey Jaskolski as the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year. Each year this prestigious award is granted to an individual whose actions, achievements and spirit personify leadership in exploration and storytelling. In the course of confronting challenges facing our planet, Jaskolski and past recipients have made critical discoveries that inspire the world to act on behalf of a more sustainable future.

A National Geographic Fellow since 2012, Jaskolski has designed, built and deployed technologies for exploration and conservation missions across all seven continents and in some of the world's most remote and unforgiving environments. Jaskolski has descended 12,500 feet below the ocean's surface in a three-person submarine to explore the Titanic. He also led an effort to produce a high resolution aerial LIDAR map of the entirety of the world's highest glacier on Mt. Everest and has ventured deep inside flooded caves to digitize Maya human-sacrifice victims and Ice-Age bear skeletons.

Most recently, Jaskolski developed a custom camera array to capture a 3D-digital copy of a critically endangered Sumatran rhino. It's this work, in particular, that led Jaskolski to found Synthetaic, a synthetic data company that grows high-quality data to unlock impossible AI.

Previously, limited data on both animals and poachers had constrained the use of similar AI-based technologies for conservation work. Through the combined use of high-fidelity 3D modeling and novel, generative AI, Synthetaic has been able to grow a large and high-quality dataset sufficient for machine learning.

"Working with National Geographic has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Through my work as a Fellow, I have been exposed to some of the greatest challenges facing conservation and exploration today, and I am honored that the technologies I've developed have served a role in addressing these challenges," said Jaskolski. "In founding Synthetaic, I hope to continue this legacy by extending AI to other critical areas that have previously been overlooked due to data constraints."

Synthetaic is working with Save the Elephants to support the organization's aerial elephant survey work through real-time conservation intelligence. Synthetaic is also leveraging its technology to fill gaps in training data and generate AI models that solve for critical use cases in security and medical imaging.

No matter the size of an initial sample, Synthetaic closes the statistical gaps in AI training data using a novel, generative approach. Synthetaic can produce high-quality training data even if there is no starter sample at all.

"Photos of illegal poachers are scarce. Real-time feedback for neurosurgeons in the operating room has been held back by limited image repositories of rare brain cancers," Jaskolski continued. "What if edge cases for AI no longer existed? What if training data was no longer a constraint?"

Synthetaic doesn't just grow data. The company also supervises the subsequent training and deployment of ultra-high accuracy AI models that deliver results outperforming those generated using traditional approach.

About Synthetaic

Synthetaic is the leading synthetic data company. We grow high-quality data that unlocks impossible AI.

In some of the most high stakes use cases for artificial intelligence, sample islands have prevented high-quality predictive modeling. There simply hasn't been sufficient data to train networks effectively, for both still and moving images in particular.

With Synthetaic, you no longer have to wait around to accumulate enough data to start the AI project of your dreams. Neither is it necessary to spend a fortune acquiring a novel data trove. We close the gap between the data rich and everyone else.
