Rialto City Council to appoint new member

RIALTO, Jan 09, 2013 (San Bernardino County Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The City Council moved forward Tuesday with plans to fill the vacant seat on the dais through an appointment process.

In a 4-0 council vote, officials decided to have interested applicants submit letters to the City Clerk's office by Friday at 5 p.m.

Interviews will take place before the Jan. 22 council meeting, when the new member of the council will be appointed.

Councilman Shawn O'Connell said his discussions with voters revealed that folks here want the council to move quickly to fill the vacancy.

"I believe we should move forward with an appointment," O'Connell said.

Officials cited the need to address the city's budget issues with a full council, in opting not to wait for a costly June election.

While the meeting agenda said a special election could cost up to $200,000, officials said a memo they received placed the cost at up to $285,000.

Councilman Ed Palmer cited the utility-users tax on the March ballot in voting to go with the appointment process instead of holding an election.

"I don't think we should pay for another election," Palmer said.

Mayor Deborah Robertson first came to the council through the appointment process in 2000.

She said the community would like closure on the process "not later but sooner." Interested applicants can mail letters to the City Clerk's office at 290 W. Rialto Ave., Rialto, CA. 92376.

According to the city's website, the city clerk may be reached by phone at 909-820-2519; by email at [email protected]; by fax at 909-873-9593. Reach Joshvia email, call him at 909-386-3894.
