Novell launches SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP1

(Telecomworldwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Enterprise software provider Novell Inc (Nasdaq:NOVL) announced on Wednesday the launch of SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

According to the company, SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP1 is optimised for all IT infrastructures (physical, virtual and cloud) and offers the following enhancements: broad virtualisation support, including Xen 4.0, support for KVM and Linux integration components in Hyper-V; clustering advances including support for metro area clusters, node recovery with ReaR and new administrative tools including a cluster simulator and web-based GUI; updated 2.6.32 kernel, which leverages the RAS features in Intel Xeon processor 7500 and 5600 series, such as MCA recovery, improved MPIO hardware support; new floating point and cryptographic features that deliver improved performance and security like AES-NI, as well as Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise; and new technology on the desktop, including improved audio and Bluetooth support, as well as the latest versions of Firefox, OpenOffice.org and Evolution.

With the new service pack, the company is also implementing more flexible support options that will allow customers to remain on older package releases during the product's lifecycle and will lower the hurdle to deploy upcoming service packs.

For customers that place a premium on stability, the programme delivers control and flexibility by allowing them to decide when and how to upgrade. Long Term Service Pack Support will continue to be available for customers that want full technical support and fixes backported to earlier releases.

Also with SP1, the company announces enhancements to the Partner Linux Driver Program, a programme that allows SUSE Linux Enterprise customers to receive the latest supported hardware drivers and kernel modules from the Novell partner ecosystem in a timely manner.

SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP1 contains major upgrades to the following products: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server; SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop; SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension; SUSE Linux Enterprise Point of Service; and SUSE Linux Enterprise Virtual Machine Driver Pack.

The upgraded products will be generally available on 2 June 2010. For a limited time, qualifying customers can receive free training, migration assistance and unlimited virtualisation support with their purchase of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscriptions. No other pricing details were disclosed.
