Knight Ridder Council of TNG-CWA Endorses Plan for 'Worker-Friendly' Media Company

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was written and adopted by delegates to the Knight Ridder Council meeting in San Jose, Calif., on March 18, 2006. The council includes representatives of local unions of The Newspaper Guild-CWA at newspapers owned by Knight Ridder Inc.

At this time of uncertainty and angst, we the employees of 12 Knight- Ridder newspapers have an unprecedented opportunity to have a direct voice in our future. Employee-ownership offers us a chance to create a place where employees want to work and invest. These award-winning and profitable newspapers will form the basis of a ground-breaking media company.
We believe the strength of a "worker-friendly" company rests in the experience, talent and commitment of its union and non-union employees. This includes workers in the advertising, production, finance, maintenance, circulation, administration and editorial departments.
Together, we can bring the focus of our business back home with confidence that revenues will follow.
We will focus on our communities, our customers and advertisers, good journalism and sound, responsible businesses practices.
The Knight-Ridder Council believes that a partnership with The Yucaipa Companies will allow us to reach our greatest potential as an innovative media company.
In a deal that is pending, Knight Ridder has agreed to be purchased by the McClatchy Co., which immediately put the newspapers represented by TNG-CWA and others up for sale.
TNG-CWA is working, in partnership with The Yucaipa Companies of Los Angeles, to create a worker-friendly and customer-friendly company to buy and improve 12 Knight Ridder newspapers and their online services. For more information on this statement and important work, please visit or email
