How to Avoid Software Audit Headaches

SOUTHLAKE, Texas, Jan. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The recent increase in the number and type of software audits has become a threat to companies and their brands. Many companies are paying substantial fines and suffering negative publicity.  "More and more of my clients are becoming wise to industry audit tricks and are ready to push back," said Rob Scott, managing partner of the technology law firm Scott & Scott, LLP.   Scott will be sharing his experiences in representing clients in over 500 software audits in the last 10 years, in a webinar on Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

According to a recent survey, 65 percent of organizations were subject to a software audit in 2016 and 23 percent were audited three times or more. Almost half (44 percent) of surveyed organizations paid $100,000 or more in true-up costs to vendors due to noncompliance, a sharp increase from 25 percent the prior year. Twenty percent paid more than $1 million in true-up costs, more than double the number in the previous year (9 percent).

"A software audit notice brings a lot of challenges to the company being audited. This includes potentially huge costs and penalties, legal liability and business risk. No one looks forward to softwre audits. In fact, they're as popular as a wisdom tooth extraction," Scott said.

Properly preparing for and responding to software audits can reduce the financial and organizational impact on your business, according to Scott. "Businesses that are most prepared and properly represented will have the greatest success in defending the inevitable software audit," said Scott.
