(Global Data Point Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Gigabyte Technology is expected to ship 20 million motherboards in the global DIY market in 2013, historically its highest annual level, according to Taiwan-based makers.

Gigabyte shipped 4.8 million motherboards in the second quarter of 2013, resulting in shipments of 9.9 million units for the first half of the year, the sources indicated. The company is expected to ship more than 10 million motherboards in the second half of 2013, leading to at least 20 million units for the whole year, the sources said.

In addition to motherboards, Gigabyte resumed production of notebooks and tablets for own-brand sale in March 2013 and has launched P-series gaming notebook models, U-series slim high-performance notebooks, S-series business and entertainment tablets and Q-series tablets for work. Gigabyte aims to ship 230,000 notebooks and tablets in 2013, the sources indicated.

Gigabyte's handset business operations broke even in the second quarter of 2013, the sources noted. Gigabyte will launch two 5-inch smartphones, one to be equipped with a MediaTek-developed quad-core processor and the other with a Qualcomm-developed dual-core one, and 5.5-inch smartphones for sale at US$250-300 in the third quarter, the sources said. Gigabyte's handsets, 40% of which are produced in-house and 60% outsourced to China-based makers, are mainly for sale in Russia, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
