Foundry Langley Has Launched the Most Frustrating Fundraising Campaign Ever

The Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation is launching a $2.1 million fundraising campaign to build a new youth support centre, Foundry Langley, with one of the most frustrating fundraising campaigns. The Red Tape Loop challenge takes donors through a cycle of steps they need to take in order to receive the support they need, but the donors never actually reach anyone. This labyrinth of frustrations resembles the current landscape of mental and physical health support for B.C. youth.

The Red Tape Loop is part of the Foundry Langley fundraising campaign as they work to create a location in Langley that will open in 2022. Foundry Langley will provide support for various mental and physical health issues that youth, ages 12-24, experience daily here in B.C.

In Langley alone, approximately 1,000 youth need immediate and critical support for mental health and substance use but less than 25 per cent actually receive the services. That means, at most, only 250 youth are receiving adequate support per year - a number that is far too low.

"When a youth looks for help, they find themselves in a complex and fragmented system that forces them to tell their story over and over to different agencies to find the right match," says Heather Scott, executive director of Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. "A system that creates barriers and leaves a young person alone. This is when youth are vulnerable to making the wrong choice and too often a choice that we all regret."

The goal of this campaign is to provide donors with a glimpse into the reality of how frustrating it is to reach anyone in a time when you need support most. The Red Tape Loop should inspire donors to assist in funding adequate mental and physical health services for the Langley youth to ensure no one experiences being pushed aside in a critical time.
