FBI indispensible in providing spy information to NSA [Big News Network (United Arab Emirates)]

(Big News Network (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been providing technology to the National Security Agency to help the agency in its clandestine spying tactics.

The FBI has become indispensible in the NSA global spy policy, according to Foreign Policy magazine, especially in operations carried out within the US borders.

According to a report in Foreign Policy, the FBI collects huge volumes of digital information from at least nine American technology companies, including the nation's largest telecom carriers.

Internet providers and carriers have been forced as part of the NSA's PRISM system, to hand over the call records of millions of customers to the NSA on a daily basis.

The report said that it was the FBI that petitioned the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to order the collection of huge amounts of email and Internet data from the US companies.

Documents disclosed by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden have suggested the operation is run by a group within the FBI called the Data Intercept Technology Unit.

The documents in Snowden's possession confirm the unit as the conduit between the NSA and companies including Google, Facebook and YouTube.

The Data Intercept Technology Unit has the responsibility for collecting archived emails, text from chat-room sessions, social media postings, and Internet phone calls.

The NSA is then handed the data for analysis.

Foreign Policy says the FBI now wants telecom carriers and Internet service providers to install specially designed software so email and Internet traffic data can go straight to government agencies for intelligence processing.
