Fayetteville on 2013 Outlaws Late Model schedule

Nov 29, 2012 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Major-league dirt-track racing is expected return to Fayetteville Motor Speedway in 2013. The World of Outlaws Late Model circuit released its tentative schedule Thursday morning, and Fayetteville's 4/10ths-mile oval is scheduled for an April 19 date.

All that's needed to finalize the event, said track manager Larry Lee, is to sign the contract with the sanctioning body. The scheduled 50-lap feature event will pay $10,000 to the winner.

"When they fax or mail me the paperwork, as soon we get that done, it'll be official," said Lee, who is also the president of the Fayetteville-based Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series whose cars are identical to those on the Outlaws circuit.

There are 49 races on the schedule and four more dates designated as "to be announced." The total winner's purse for the season will far exceed half a million dollars, with $489,000 already scheduled in winner payouts and seven purses still to be decided. The lowest payout to win a race on the 2013 schedule is $6,000, and at least five events will boast $20,000 or more to win. Tops on the list is the USA Nationals in New Richmond, Wis., on Aug. 2-3, with a $50,000 purse to win its 100-lap main event.

Fayetteville was scheduled to host an Outlaws race May 6, 2012, but that event was canceled that week due a scheduling conflict with the adjacent dragstrip at Fayetteville Motor Sports Park.

FMS won't have to contend with that next year given a mid-month race date. And, Lee said, "That'll be right after a mid-month payday rather than that two weeks between." The Fayetteville race will be followed the next night by another 50-lapper at 311 Motor Speedway in Madison, north of Greensboro.

The most recent visit to Fayetteville by the Outlaws was April 30, 2010, when Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., beat Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., to the checkered flag by one-half car length.

In 2009, former Fayetteville track champion Jeff Smith of Dallas won when Caledonia, N.Y., driver Vic Coffey suffered a flat tire on the final lap after leading the previous 49.

On Oct. 7, 2008, the Outlaws returned to the track after being rained out midway through qualifying in mid-August. On a rare weeknight event at the speedway, Richards charged from the 18th starting position to take a 1.1-second victory over Fayetteville, Ga., driver Shane Clanton.

An Outlaws race slated for Aug. 28, 2009, at Fayetteville was cancelled because of impending rain.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt tour has also visited the track in the past decade. Smith won a 2007 show over Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., and in 2009, Ray Cook of Brasstown pocketed the $10,000 first prize.
