Cellular South Gameplan Program

Jul 25, 2010 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- Cellular South revealed its signature Cellular South Gameplan educational initiative will continue to expand due to its overwhelming success. To date, the program has helped more than 13,500 high school and junior high student athletes meet NCAA requirements so they can attend college. The Cellular South Gameplan, designed to inspire, prepare and inform participants about college opportunities and reaching their dreams through academic excellence, started in Mississippi in 2007 and has grown to support students in Alabama and Tennessee.

"The Cellular South Gameplan has added real value in our academic and athletic community and been a great resource for all parties involved," said Orien Watson, Scholastic and Sports Marketing Director at Cellular South. "The Cellular South Gameplan has a proven track record that shows early intervention, academic collaboration, personal accountability and community dedication can improve lives and change the tide for academics in communities." The Cellular South Gameplan provides junior high and high school student athletes with the tools they need to succeed and attend college. Through its renowned Web-based and on-site workshops that feature a specially designed curriculum, the program provides students, coaches, counselors, teachers and parents with necessary information on the course and grade point average requirements needed to meet NCAA standards (NCAA Division 1 core course requirements).

"Our program not only helps educate high school student athletes on the academic requirements they need to fulfill in order to participate in collegiate athletics, but also establishes a solid foundation for development of personal strength and character by encouraging students to continue their education," Watson said.

Since its Mississippi launch in 2007, the Cellular South Gameplan has reached the following milestones: Reached more than 13,500 student-athletes, parents and administrators through in-school eligibility sessions. Conducted more than 100 individual counseling sessions including both 2008 and 2009 dandy dozen football selections. More than 75 institutions and organizations have hosted one or more workshops for their student-athletes. All Mississippi high schools have been provided a DVD workshop of the Gameplan program. Helped more than 90 school districts convert their district grading scale to a 10-point or modification by educating the state on the advantages of using the scale as an accurate measure of success. Incorporated online support on www.cellularsouthgameplan.com and on Facebook.

Creating Collective Passion Cellular South designed the Gameplan with a deep appreciation for its employees and customers grounded in a common belief that where they work, live, and play becomes a part of the fabric of who they are, what they do, and why they matter.

With an emphasis on community connections, student-athletes have shown their affinity to the Southeast Region and the state by choosing opportunities to play at Ole Miss, Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State, Alabama, Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Students have also connected with smaller schools around the state like Millsaps, Delta State University, Mississippi College, Jackson State University, and Alcorn State.

"In my opinion, what the Gameplan provides is direct, relevant information that outlines the expectations related to becoming eligible to play college athletics," said former Millsaps College football standout and NCAA Division III All American, Sean Brewer. "The program requires that participants become proactive as they move through this process and helps them understand the responsibilities and requirements needed to successfully transition from high school to college." The goal of the Cellular South Gameplan is to allow for a smooth transition from high school to college. Focusing on uncovering opportunities and developing connections among students and educational institutions, the Cellular South Gameplan is a comprehensive resource for those who may not understand or become overwhelmed by the process.

"At its best, high school sports have the power to impact values, character, and instill positive behaviors," said Dr. Colby Jubenville, The Director of the Center for Sport Policy and Research at Middle Tennessee State University. "Without high school sports, we would not have college athletics. As a former college football coach and NCAA player in the state, what I love the most about what athletics is seeing positive changes happen while athletes are a part of the program and see them work through the process arriving on the other side with the skills they need to be successful both personally and professionally." "The Cellular South Gameplan helps high school sports connect individuals, teams, and communities to opportunities at the collegiate level," said Norman Joseph, head football coach at Mississippi College. "It's great when you see people working towards a common goal." "Being recognized for achievement is often a motivating factor for individuals and a source of pride for communities to come together," remarked Joseph who led the Choctaws to a NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference co-championship last season.

In addition to in-school educational workshops, the program also features follow-up counseling sessions and online assistance at www.cellularsouthgameplan.com. The company also distributed a DVD of its Gameplan seminar program to every high school in Mississippi and unveiled a website with additional online resources and information.
