BRIEF: Millcreek Township doctor tries limited practice

Feb 20, 2013 (Erie Times-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Jack Yakish, M.D., seriously considered retirement a year ago.

The 55-year-old Saint Vincent Family Medicine doctor has treated patients for 28 years and was feeling burnt out from seeing 25 people a day at Westminster Family Medicine, 3822 Colonial Ave.

"I wasn't going to do that rat race for another 10 years," Yakish said. "I was ready to quit." Other doctors in Yakish's position have either retired or accepted jobs as hospitalists, in which they only see patients inside a hospital.

But Yakish is trying something new in this area. He has downsized his practice from around 2,000 patients to about 300 and is giving each patient more attention and greater access.

Patients pay a yearly fee in addition to their health insurance -- in Yakish's case it's $1,650 -- and in return they receive an annual in-depth physical, same-day appointments and his cell phone number.
