BRIEF: Man held after 5-hour Ecorse standoff

Dec 19, 2010 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man is in custody after a five-hour standoff ended in Ecorse early this morning.

Police were called to a home in the 4400 block of 6th Street in Ecorse and found a man in his early 30s shot in the stomach on the porch, police Sgt. William McCaig said.

The man's uncle allegedly shot him once after an argument and then barricaded himself in the home with his 72-year-old mother and a 6-year-old nephew, he said.

Negotiators with the Downriver Mutual Aid SWAT Team were called just after midnight and attempted to make contact with the man, believed to be 45 years old, by throwing a phone in the house, but he threw the phone back out, McCaig said.

Police used tear gas and the man surrendered at about 4:30 a.m. this morning, McCaig said. The woman and child in the house were not hurt.

The suspect is in the Ecorse jail, McCaig said. He has not been charged.

The shooting victim was taken to the Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. A condition report is not available.

Police aren't releasing the names of the people involved.
