Bangladesh,India,Myanmar,Sri Lanka : BHARTI AIRTEL in the race for telecom license in MYANMAR [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The top player of Indian telecom industry Bharti Airtel has presented an offer for obtaining a license in Myanmar in order to widen its footprint in the Asian region. At present, the telecom giant has been operating in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The planned sale of license in Myanmar has lured several international members of the telecom industry, together with Norwegian Telenor and Malaysian Axiata. These telecom biggies have also tendered their proposals in order to get a permit to deliver mobile telephony services in Myanmar.

Airtel has become the newest overseas telecom operator aspiring to achieve new licence so that it can capitalize the unexplored market of Myanmar. The country plans to widen its telecommunications networks subsequent to the end of many decades of military administration.

In early January, Myanmar had started bidding procedure and issued requests to overseas telecom players for their offers. The aspirants were required to present bids by 25th of this month. Under the planned sale of license, Myanmar will issue two licenses in order to enlarge telecom coverage to up to 80% of the country within 2016 and it will offer the licenses by June this year, which might continue for up to 20 years, with an option for renewal.

Myanmar s quasi-civilian government came into power in 2011, and started implementing several political reformation measures, which led to removal of sanctions imposed by the US and the Western world. This has helped attract the attentions of worldwide telecom companies, who are keen to explore the untapped market of the country.
