The Impact of Advanced Technology on Legal System

One of the oldest professions in human civilization is the legal profession.  Over the centuries, this profession has experienced significant changes in the way it operates. However, when it comes to the use of technology, this profession has not really been amongst the early adopters. Luckily, things have now started changing for good and legal services around the world have started embracing the benefits of technology instead of still relying on archaic practices.

Over the last decade or so, the impact of technology on legal systems has been immense. Many of you may have noticed that most of the local attorneys in your locality have already ditched the age-old practice of paper delivery and have started using emails as the primary mode of communication. Similarly, due diligence has been replaced by e-discovery and filing processes have made way for e-filing in many law offices around the world. Some other notable changes include shifting to cloud computing from traditional libraries and the use of revenue model instead of the billable hour model. All these changes have been made possible by the advent of a plethora of new technologies. In the near future, the legal system is expected to benefit even more from the application of new innovative technologies.

Artificial Intelligence is undoubtedly a life-changing technology that has already made its presence felt in many industry segments. AI may be referred to as a machine’s ability to imitate the behavior of human beings. The process that allows machines to learn and apply human behavior is defined as predictive coding. The combination of these two amazing technologies has already led to the creation of an advanced legal research tool known as ROSS. This AI-powered system is also known as the A.I. Lawyer, and enhances the efficiency of the legal research process.

Blockchain is another new technology that has already taken the world by storm. Talking about blockchain technology, we think mostly about cryptocurrency transactions. However, this technology has already made its impact on the legal system. In the intellectual property sphere, blockchain technology can be used by the applicants as an encrypted public ledger to submit trademark-related details. Their applications can be granted or dismissed by the system based on the specifics of the submitted algorithms.

The impact of technology on the legal system can be seen both within the law offices as well as in the courtrooms.

As far as law firms are concerned, the advent of technology means that they are no longer dependent on conducting face-to-face meetings. Electronic communication channels such as email, Skype (News - Alert), WhatsApp, Zoom, and many others have now made it possible for them to carry out client meetings from anywhere in the world. Research is one of the most important facets of the legal field and the introduction of technology now allows law offices to conduct legal research, automate them, and send them for review with just a few clicks of the mouse. Needless to mention, most of the large law offices now have fully functional IT departments to handle their tech-related tasks and concerns.

The impact of technology has already been seen in several courtroom operations in recent years. There are several instances where legal notices have been served by the courtroom through electronic means such as Facebook (News - Alert), Instagram, and WhatsApp. In order to ensure that there is no abuse of the court procedures, these innovative transformations are approached with extreme caution. With the advent of electronic filing, the future holds tremendous potential for secure teleconferencing in the legal system. This can be particularly useful for the mitigation of post-traumatic stress in rape cases, in the presence of both the parties.
