Top Reasons to Own Your VoIP Billing System

If you are considering offering VoIP services to your customers, determining how you will bill for those services is a big decision. Do you use a billing system that’s integrated into your softswitch or utilize a third-party standalone system? Do you rent the system or is it worth the investment to buy? Cost, performance, integration, maintenance and customization options are all factors in this process. There are also a wide variety of additional features beyond the standard origination/termination services that must be accounted for, such as call forwarding, voicemail, IVR, ring groups and callback.



There are two main models for billing systems:

  • Bundled systems are generally produced by the same company as your softswitch or PBX (News - Alert) and are generally sold as an add-on module.
  • Stand-alone systems are software packages made by a third-party company and are not tied to any specific switch or PBX. These packages integrate with your switch and other systems via APIs.
