Miranda Routers Enable Satellite Communications in Developing Countries

By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer

In a 2011 paper for the Journal of Emerging Trends in Computing and Information Sciences, author AAA. Atayero of the ISEE pointed out the crucial role that satellite plays in developing countries.

Satellite carries communications into remote rural areas that lack fiber, coaxial and microwave infrastructure. "It is often the only viable network in special situations where difficult terrain, climatic conditions or territories separated by large bodies of water renders conventional telecommunications impossible," Atayero wrote.

ViewSat provides digital services to countries all over the world but particularly to countries in the Africa, the Middle East and Asia (AMEA). The company specializes in enabling broadcast communications over satellite from its base in the U.K.

Miranda Technologies, Inc., announced this week that it had installed two of its NVISION 8144 routers at ViewSat. The new routers will enhance ViewSat architecture by working in tandem with the NVISION 8576 already installed in ViewSat's larger facilities.

The 8576 handles all signals and routes them to the 8144s, which feed the encoders. This setup takes care of redundancy switching so that the network can be controlled while still meeting increasing demand.

In addition to the routers, ViewSat uses Miranda's iControl video network management system and its Kaleido line of multi-viewers. The Kaleido-X handles source monitoring while the Kaleido-IP takes care of return monitoring. iControl then notifies ViewSat of potential problems via the viewers, and then ViewSat notifies its customers.

"We love being able to notify a customer that we've intercepted and resolved a suspected fault before it's had any impact," said Nazir Uddin, ViewSat's head of operations. "One of the beauties of iControl is that it is flexible and customizable, and we are working with Miranda on some highly innovative ideas that will further fine tune and extend our control system to support our future plans."

Satellite communication helps developing economies to meet their telecommunications, maritime, defense, revenue diversification and security needs. As long as satellite dominates in this area, ViewSat and Miranda will have a niche in the AMEA.
