Orbotix Launches New Augmented Reality Games

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

While I wouldn’t necessary call myself a video gamer the same way hardcore gamers would, I certainly enjoy my own games. As such, I was interested to hear about the new augmented reality gaming apps from Orbotix, creator of Sphero.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)) in Las Vegas, Orbotix revealed the next generation of Sphero games, taking augmented reality as far as it can currently go. From the Internet-popular features such as Nyan Cat and zombies to multi-player games, it’s experimenting with new and exciting ways to turn real life into a game.

The popularity of zombies is proving just as hard to kill as the zombies themselves, so Sphero’s got some zombie games coming out too. With The Rolling Dead, players can use Sphero to blast virtual zombies with fireballs, combining the fun of killing zombies and burning things into one game.

There’s also its Sharky the Beaver game, for beaver-controlling, cupcake-throwing good times, or a new Sphero Nyan Cat SpaceParty app, based off the popular “Nyan Cat” video.

There are plenty more where those came from, with over 20 games added to SPhero’s catalogue, including multi-player games for hanging out with friends.

“We strive to continually push the envelope and reimagine how consumers can interact in the world of smart devices and games,” said Orbotix CEO Paul Berberian. “With the introduction of Sphero’s augmented reality gaming, we’re showcasing how technology is evolving and changing how users experience gameplay in multiple realms. Look for more augmented reality gaming from Sphero in 2013, as we continue to innovate in this space.”

I’ve played some augmented reality games before, and while they remain gimmicky, it’s a great idea that provides good fun. Being able to view a screen that shows reality as part of the game is plenty of fun, which is the real point of video games.

We now have the technology to make augmented reality games work, and it’s great to see Orbotix is putting it to use in all these games.
