WishTel Unveils Plan for New Low-cost Tablet and Netbook

By Daniel Brecht, Contributing Writer

The Mumbai-based tablet maker, WishTel is one of the few companies aiming to change Indian education through tablet computers. Ever since its foundation, its mission was to produce low-cost computing devices so education and technology could become an integral part of the society’s professional development.

Through the years and thanks to a series of low-cost tablets, WishTel has brought people closer to technology and has aimed at extending education for free without boundaries.

Two low-cost and efficient tablets have already been released by the company for both corporate and educational uses: IRA and IRAThing 2. Both run Android (News - Alert) 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and are the company’s first Indian language tablets to be sold to the community. Each one supports 23 regional Indian languages.  Despite their low cost, they feature USB, Micro SD card support as well as Wi-Fi and 3G connections.

In association with India’s largest PSU Telco operator BSNL, in October WishTel launched the 7-inch Triple Play (News - Alert) tablet PC, IRA ICON for less than $200. The tablet features an older version of Android (2.3), but supports Wi-Fi and built-in 3G connection as well as many of the features users can find in more expansive tablets.

WishTel has developed its own Linux-based platform by working in conjunction with the Homi Bhabha Centrer for Science Education. The platform, named PrithV, will be used in the new low-cost offer that WishTel is soon to release. The new tablet and netbook, which will enrich the WishTel product lines, will be developed with universities and students in mind.

As the company CEO Milind Shah states, the main purpose of these new devices will be to help school and college students enrich their education by researching beyond what’s found in their schoolbooks. True to this goal, the new PrithV platform will support 85 global languages and will have preloaded educational and self-learning software available for users.

Prices will be very competitive, with the tablet costing around $50 and the netbook being placed on the market for $120.
