U.K. Plugs In with Olympics Smartphone App by BBC

By Braden Becker, Copy Editor

Athletes from ancient Greece wouldn’t recognize this year’s Olympics.

As the world passes the torch to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics, the country responded with a little more than a new stadium, according to PC Mag. The BBC has launched an app for Blackberry, Apple (News - Alert) and Android devices, allowing users not in the stands or on the couch to enjoy the games just as well as those attending them.

NBC recently partnered with Adobe (News - Alert) for a similar service in the U.S.

Via 3G and Wi-Fi, the British-based app issues space for 24 live streams of Olympic competition, supplemented with text commentary by BBC News reporters, as well as a template of profiles on athletes, results and medals from each country participating.

The app also features 36 individual pages for each sport.

"We needed to ensure everyone could access our coverage," said BBC News general manager Phil Fearnley. "The BBC Sport Olympics app ensures that everything you need to keep up to date with the action is right there at your fingertips. Even when you're out of range of 3G or wireless, we'll still be able to deliver the latest news to you offline."

The free program, rated highly by Google (News - Alert) Play, lets its users mold the app based on which events they’re most interested in, and quickly share them via e-mail with friends.

The application’s Android (News - Alert) version is compatible with OS 2.2 and above, according to BBC blogger Lucie McLean, and requires Flash to play each live stream.

This year’s U.S. Olympic Team boasts over 500 athletes from 44 of the 50 states. Opening ceremonies are July 27.
