Google Chrome is Released to the World of Applications for the iPhone and iPad

By Alison Cederbaum, TMCnet Contributor

With the creation and popularity of Apple (News - Alert) products such as the iPhone and iPad, it is hard to imagine something these pieces of technology are lacking. Both of these products offer a wide variety of different applications and have now become more evolved, offering different version of each application. The selection of applications one can choose from is intensifying, and now these products welcome Google (News - Alert) Chrome to the list.

As of today, Google’s Chrome browser can be used to surf the Web on both the iPhone and the iPad. This application is the latest volley in the escalating rivalry between Google and Apple, the creator of the popular and must have mobile devices. Google’s attempt to supersede Apple Inc.’s own Safari browser comes a day after it revealed its plans to sell a low-priced tablet computer to compete against the iPad and Kindle Fire. With the competition steadily emerging, Chrome on Apple’s mobile operating system arrived a month after Yahoo Inc. released a browser called Axis (News - Alert) for the iPhone and iPad.

Google Inc. has recently revealed that Chrome now has 310 million active users, up from 160 million a year ago.  In addition, since Google has released the browser in 2008, Chrome also has become the foundation for an operating system powering a line of lightweight laptops that debuted last year.

“Some of you have been very persistently asking about something. I’m very happy to say the team has really pulled something great off,” Google’s VP for Chrome, Brian Rakowski, said on stage at the Google I/O conference.

Contrary to Axis, Chrome has already become one of the most popular alternatives to Microsoft (News - Alert) Corp.’s Internet Explorer, found on traditional computers. While the Chrome browser can now be used in iOS devices, it cannot be set as the default browser. URLs in an email will still take you to the default Safari browser. The apps for iPhone and iPad will be available in Apple's App Store later Thursday.
