Atmel and Celeno Develop Wi-Fi Direct Remote Controls, Host of Wi-Fi-Based Products for STBs, Home Entertainment
Touch technology leader Atmel Corp. is working with Celeno Communications (News - Alert), provider of Wi-Fi chips and software, to create integrated solutions for high-performance Wi-Fi Direct remote controls.
Their collaboration will focus on controls intended for next-generation platforms for set-top boxes (STB) and video gateways.
With Atmel’s (News - Alert) expertise in microcontrollers and Celeno’s experience in high-performance Wi-Fi solutions, the companies are set to create a joint solution which will enable designers of wireless products to get to market faster and save on power and system costs.
“The use of Atmel Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct technology for connecting to peripheral devices, such as remotes, is a logical choice,” explained Lior Weiss, vice president of marketing for Celeno.
Weiss added the benefits of the collaboration, saying “This solution eliminates the need to add other RF technology to the platform, while providing a more intuitive and feature-rich user experience with existing Wi-Fi signals.”
The way the system will work is with Celeno providing the connection to the Atmel-based remote control, leveraging the robust Internet connectivity offered by Celeno.
“The Celeno video-grade Wi-Fi technology is perfect for Atmel Wi-Fi Direct peripheral solutions. This joint collaboration offers a proven, end-to-end solution to cable providers with seamless connections for all peripherals, like the remote control, while enabling high data rate media streaming,” said Bill McLean, vice president and general manager of Wi-Fi solutions at Atmnel.
Because RF remote controls are fast replacing infrared remote controls, this joint venture could prove significantly popular in the wireless home-based entertainment market, connecting all sorts of devices generally used in the home, such as speaker systems and television units.
Infrared remotes just can’t match the scope and reach of radio frequency controls, and this versatility is preferred in the home environment.
Atmel and Celeno will debut the products of their collaboration with a demonstration of their new set-top box platform at CES (News - Alert) International 2013, located in the Las Vegas Hotel Suite 530, from January 8-13.
