Patch-Based Solution Tracks Location, Posture and Vitals of Individuals

SecuraTrac this week at CES (News - Alert) in Las Vegas unveiled the SecuraPatch. This solution includes two key components: a sensor-enabled patch that attaches to the human body, and the company’s existing SecuraFone Health mobile app.

The five-year-old firm got its start in the GPS tracking space, marketing products to help families to keep track of their children. Then it expanded to address the needs of the elderly and their families by delivering solutions to alert adult children when their parents are elsewhere and require assistance.

More recently, the company got into mobile applications, creating an app called SecuraPhone, which offers tracking and SOS (News - Alert) alerting capabilities.

Now, with SecuraPatch, it’s bringing a health aspect to the application, so it can track heart rate, respiration rate and posture (whether the person is sitting, standing or on the ground).

This latest solution, for which the company is seeking medical- and sports-related go-to-market partners, was designed for a variety of potential applications, including to keep tabs on recovering patients who recently returned home, the elderly and alzheimers patients; and for use by athletes.

Jeremy Malara, CTO of SecuraTrac, shows the SecuraPatch. The SecuraFone Health solution includes three SecuraPatchs for under $20 and the app, for which there is a monthly fee that will be under $20 per month. The final prices have not yet been determined.

Vital statistics and other user data is collected by a small device (which you keep) built into the (disposable) patches that use Bluetooth to connect with smartphones (the iPhone (News - Alert) today, Android devices soon) within 30 feet.

The company is also working to make patches that are completely disposable.

Adults, children, healthcare professionals and other authorized individuals can check the status of this information via a Web portal, which also leverages Google (News - Alert) maps to provide personal location information. The company is also working on adding analytics capabilities to the solution, so people can look at vital statistics trends over time.

While other “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” types of solutions on the market have a large number of false positives, this solution does not, given its attached to the body rather than hanging loosely around the neck.
