Seagate Unveils New Mobile Wireless Storage Media Server at CES 2013

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 in Las Vegas this week, Seagate (News - Alert) unveiled its brand-new mobile wireless storage expander/media-streaming server for mobile devices – Seagate Wireless Plus. According to CNET, Seagate Wireless Plus is a vastly improved version of its first such device, labeled Seagate Satellite, which debuted a year and a half ago.

However, as per the report, Seagate refrains from calling the new device a second generation Seagate Satellite. CNET reporter Dong Ngo had the opportunity to check out the product, where it was discovered that the new Seagate Wireless Plus is indeed a new device, though it shares the same concept as its predecessor.

Unlike the Satellite’s 500 GB storage, the Wireless Plus is a 1 TB portable bus-powered drive boasting a built-in battery and a Wireless-N access point. It allows up to eight Wi-Fi devices to connect to its Wi-Fi network and then uses its internal storage as its networked storage expander, wrote Ngo.

According to the report, the key feature of the Wireless Plus is that users can stream digital content that it stores to all connected devices, making it a great companion for a tablet or a smartphone. While Satellite offers six hours of battery life, the Wireless Plus is designed to deliver 10 hours of continuous battery life, the report added.

Additionally, one can use the Wireless Plus to connect to an existing Internet Wi-Fi network and then share that Internet connection to the Wi-Fi devices connected to it.Ngo had the opportunity to test this feature at CES (News - Alert) 2013 and found it very useful. “I don't need to pay separately for each of my Wi-Fi devices, but I also don't need to manually add each to a new Wi-Fi network. Instead, I just have to connect the Wireless Plus to the existing hot spot and everything else is then connected to the Internet,” wrote Ngo of the exclusive experience.

Besides larger storage space and a longer battery life, the Wireless Plus is also more compact than its predecessor. Plus, like Satellite, it also works with a mobile app called Seagate Media, which is available for both iOS and Android (News - Alert) devices. The report indicates that the upgraded app offers improved user interface and functionality to support all the features Wireless Plus has to offer.

Seagate Wireless Plus is available immediately, carrying a price tag (News - Alert) of $200.
