SIP End Points Leader Panasonic Unveils 'Smart Desk Phone,' an Industry First

The wait is finally over as the first SIP open source-based operating system desk phone –that allows for integrated solutions to be developed for business communications and operations –is here, thanks to SIP phones leader Panasonic (News - Alert).

This week, Panasonic, a leader in small business phone systems, introduced the KX-UT670 Smart Desk Phone which expands upon the company’s current lineup of SIP UT Series telephones. The KX -UT670 boasts a full operating, open source, system as well as a Web browser, seven-inch color LCD Touch screen and HD wideband voice and high quality HD video. It is certified for Broadsoft, Asterisk (News - Alert) and Metaswitch; can be expandable to six SIP terminals; and has the ability to support Bluetooth.

“As a trusted name in consumer electronics, and a leader in the business telephone market, Panasonic is committed to offering innovative telephony solutions to enhance business productivity,” said Bill Savino, marketing manager for business communication solutions at Panasonic System Communications Company of North America.  “By incorporating open source technology in the new KX-UT670 SIP phone, we are pushing the boundaries of the future of business communications while still offering business owners reliable, flexible and cost-effective solutions that they have come to know from Panasonic.  Additionally, we are opening up a new door for application developers to move into a growing industry segment and effectively enhance business communications.”

This week, at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)), taking place in Las Vegas, Nev., from Jan. 10-13, participants are getting a firsthand look at Panasonic’s latest product.

The KX-UT670 is capable of enhancing operations in a variety of verticals such as retail, education, healthcare and hospitality. The SIP phone relies on the use of the high-quality video (H.264/720P) viewer and up to 16 integrated Panasonic Network Security Cameras, so that managers in retail environments can monitor a store with their desk phone from a back office or even from home. Similarly, a school administrator can use the phone to observe a situation that has gotten out of hand in a classroom.

At the end of last year, TMCnet had the chance to sit down with Kim Murtagh, product manager of SIP End Points at Panasonic, to discuss the latest release. According to Murtagh, Panasonic anticipates that this SIP phone will have the potential of finding a home in everything from an SMB to a major Fortune 500 company.

“The main difference with this phone is that it allows us to have the ability to work with third-party application developers and help enhance the end user experience with applications,” Murtagh said at the time.

“This one is really key for us,” she added of the phone. “There is no other phone out there that takes all of these pieces and brings them together so seamlessly and when you add the ability for us to add in those other products that are Panasonic, it really now gives that dealer, that customer, the ability to bring forward a full solution to their customer base.”

Other features of the KX-UT670 include a large, seven-inch LCD touch screen that allows for easy access to control phone features and installed applications. The open source-based operating system is also programmable in Java, one of the most popular programming languages, which allows companies to utilize a variety of business-friendly applications or develop ones which are specifically designed to fit their needs.

Moreover, applications can be easily loaded onto the phone using the built-in SD Memory Card Slot.  Users can also take advantage of Web browsing, access email directly from their phone and check daily calendar appointments.
