BitTorrent Has Over 100 Million Users Per Month

BitTorrent now has more than 100 million users each month. The demand is for two software products – BitTorrent Mainline and µTorrent, the company says.

Eric Klinker (News - Alert), CEO at BitTorrent, said in a statement that the “milestone highlights the size of our user base and the power of our software." BitTorrent (News - Alert) provides software to move larger files across the Internet.

"Our vision is to build a complete technology ecosystem comprised of software, content and devices, designed to connect modern content creators with a massive digital audience," Klinker added.

The company said that its average daily active users are over 20 million. In addition, its average daily client downloads are over 400,000.

In a recent blog post, TMCnet Chief Technology Officer Tom Keating (News - Alert) said, “BitTorrent is great at distributing large files very fast via its P2P technology.”

He noted how Facebook's Tom Cook said BitTorrent made their server deployment much faster.

“With their BitTorrent-powered distribution system Facebook (News - Alert) is now able to send a few hundred MB to tens of thousands of machines in just one minute… Without BitTorrent, this process could take several hours to complete,” according to a report from TorrentFreak.

Twitter also uses BitTorrent for server deployment, Keating said. Besides social networking sites, several universities are using BitTorrent, according to a blog posting on TorrentFreak.

“It’s beginning to look like BitTorrent may become the standard for large scale networks that want to update their machines quickly and efficiently,” adds TorrentFreak. “With huge brands such as Facebook and Twitter adopting it, we can only expect that others will follow their lead.”

BitTorrent will be showing some of its products and future applications at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nev., from Jan. 6 to 8.

BitTorrent is based in San Francisco.
