IBM (News - Alert) announced that IDG's Computerworld has honored it as Top Green IT Company, for the year 2008.

International Data Group (IDG) is a technology media, events, and research company. It has an online network that includes more than 450 Web sites covering business technology, consumer technology, digital entertainment, and video games.

Computerworld is a provider of technology news and information for IT influencers worldwide. It is part of IDG. Computerworld's Web site includes a weekly publication, focused conference series and custom research.

Project Big Green is a $1 billion initiative taken by IBM and its clients, to reduce energy.

The initiative includes a five step approach to energy efficiency in the data center and producing and developing new energy efficient IBM products and services. Sincere approach can effectively reduce data center energy consumption, thereby providing energy savings of up to 42 percent for an average data center and transforming client’s technology infrastructure into "green" data centers.

Project Big Green includes a new global "green team" of more than 850 energy efficiency architects from IBM.

"Being 'green' is not just saying you're conscious about the environment and its challenges. In today's business world, it's about efficiency, power consumption and applying those green principles to smart business decision making," said Don Tennant, editorial director, Computerworld, in a statement.

Tennant continued: "IBM, recognized as the leading Green IT company in our first Top Green-IT Computing issue, has taken a serious look at how they impact the environment and how they can address those challenges with good business sense, through their Project Big Green initiative and a company-wide focus on energy efficient technology and services."

"IBM is honored to be named the Top Green IT Company for 2008 by IDG and Computerworld," said Steve Sams, vice president of IBM Global Site and Facilities Services, in the statement, "This is reflective of IBM's long-term commitment to the environment, and of the global success with clients that we've seen with our cross-company Project Big Green initiative, as we assess and implement strategies for our clients to be able to double their computing capacity without increasing energy use."

IDG’s Computerworld magazine started a mission in 2007, to identify companies that are implementing smart, efficient strategies to achieve "green IT." It took help of select green IT experts, in developing a set of criteria that would best identify the companies that are working to reduce energy consumption in IT equipment and also are those companies who are using technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions.

Computerworld editors along with feedback from experts developed a checklist-style survey and also weighting scheme, for fair and clean choice. It then reached out to the IT community through a variety of channels. A total of 86 complete surveys were received. Computerworld then verified with the companies, to check weather the information provided on their company's survey was correct.

Based on the weighting scheme developed, the top 12 Green-IT Users and top 12 Green-IT Vendors lists were chosen. IBM was chosen as the Top most Green Company.
