Openet, Sun Team on 'Green' Solution for Tier 1 Service Provider Transaction Processing

Transactional intelligence solutions provider Openet (News - Alert) recently announced a partnership with Sun Microsystems on a new solution designed to help Tier 1 service providers improve the speed and efficiency of their billing and transaction systems.

 

By combining Openet’s FusionWorks platform and Sun’s Fire T2000 server and Solaris operating system, the two companies have created a solution that can, per server, process 7,000 transactions per second for charges and 2,300 transactions per section for ratings.

 

To learn more about this deal, and what it means for Tier 1 service providers, TMCnet asked Joe Hogan, chief technology officer at Openet, to provide some background.

 

 

JH: Openet and Sun have worked side-by-side on numerous Tier 1 accounts. However, this is the first formalized joint development effort between the two companies.  Openet has become an associate member of the Sun’s Partner Advantage program, and now takes full advantage of the Sunsm Sales Connect co-selling program.

 

 

JH: Service providers today face many challenges with charging and rating—most notably, speed, accuracy, scale and technology reliability. With the number of voice and data transactions traveling over service provider networks increasing every day, service providers face potential revenue loss through ineffective charging and rating practices. Openet’s FusionWorks Platform enables customers to capture transactional intelligence at the network edge to ensure accurate, real-time charging and rating, regardless of transaction volume—100 percent of the time.

 

 

JH: Openet and Sun formed a technology partnership at the request of a joint Tier 1 customer aiming to leverage cost-effective solutions to achieve a reduced ecological footprint and as a result, lessen the economic and environmental impact for telecom service providers. 

 

 

JH: Running a green datacenter saves cooling and other energy costs through the combined deployment of efficient, scalable systems with less expensive, lighter-weight hardware. The Openet FusionWorks Platform and Sun Fire T2000 solution bring together the key ingredients service providers need to realize the value of green.

 

Beyond the immediate cost savings, there is the opportunity to generate additional ROI. This solution is able to process 7,000 transactions per second (TPS) for charging and 2,300 TPS for rating per single server. These results far exceed the levels of throughput available from other vendors in the industry, as well as the current requirements of today’s Tier 1 service providers for the hardware footprint used, extending the value and life of this type of deployment well into the future.
