Net Neutrality is About Methods of Dealing with Latency and Business Advantage

What precisely the Federal Communications Commission ultimately might do in terms of new network neutrality rules is unclear, and in some ways, more confused than a month ago. Originally, new proposed FCC net neutrality rules would have allowed content delivery networks to be created that extend from the edge of the network to the actual end user. Whether that will remain the case is now the issue.

Why You Need to Know: Strictly speaking, net neutrality is about whether content delivery networks can extend to the end user. But it also is about permissible methods used by ISPs to alleviate latency issues.

AudioCodes IP Phone Receives Recommended Status

The AudioCodes 420HD IP Phone has received recommended status for use with Interactive Intelligence's Customer Interaction Center all-in-one IP communications software suite. Receiving the recommended status requires vendors like AudioCodes to have provisioning integration support for CIC, and to meet stringent requirements related to configuration, documentation, installation, performance, reliability, and SIP interoperability.

Why You Need to Know: A key benefit for CIC customers is that they now have an opportunity to reduce training and simplify support by getting their gateways, SBCs and IP Phones from a single supplier.

Study Says Network Experts Are Mixed on SDN

Software-defined networking is causing much trepidation among network managers and engineers, with 12 percent of those surveyed saying SDN is critical, and 80 percent suggesting it is either unimportant or they are going to ride out of the hype. That's according to JDSU business unit Network Instruments, which today unveiled the results of its Seventh Annual State of the Network Global Study. The study takes into consideration the views of 241 network professionals.

Why You Need to Know: Part of the problem, it seems, is that even network experts are not sure just exactly what SDN is, as Network Instruments reports nearly 40 percent of those it surveyed are having trouble defining SDN.

With Increased Cloud Service Adoption Comes Greater Potential for Security Risks

The adoption of cloud services is on the rise, but with it is the potential for risk, with malware posing an increasing problem for organizations using cloud services. Skyhigh Networks has released its latest quarterly Cloud Adoption and Risk Report, which puts into perspective the amount of risk that comes with skyrocketing levels of cloud adoption.

Why You Need to Know: Although Windows XP is not being supported by Microsoft as of last month, 18 percent of those surveyed had at least 1,000 devices running XP that access pubic cloud services. Without continuing support for the operating system, these devices may be vulnerable and present a risk factor.

Report Finds SAP's Cloud Expansion Will Benefit Resellers

While most companies are at least investigating a move to the cloud for mission-critical applications, it's understandable that the idea causes some apprehension. Many cloud-based solutions are offered by unfamiliar companies, and while they often offer excellent products, many buyers long for familiar faces and names when they make the switch to the cloud.

Why You Need to Know: It's not just about end-users: systems integrators and resellers are also comforted by the presence of tried-and-true market leaders when it comes to solutions such as CRM, ERP, sales, contact center and help desk applications.
