Exalt Unveils ExploreAir Microwave Backhaul Platform Suited for 4G/LTE Applications

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Exalt (News - Alert) Communications has announced the introduction of a new microwave backhaul platform, ExploreAir which offers high throughput and long range in microwave and millimeter wave spectrum.

The ExploreAir platform based systems exhibit speeds as high as 500 Mbps in full duplex for all Ethernet packet types and sizes. These systems have high capacity besides including a built-in compression option for providing speeds up to 1000 Mbps with a single carrier and in a single channel.

As these systems show fiber-like performance they are suited for 4G/LTE mobile and WiMAX (News - Alert) backhaul for supporting devices requiring high bandwidth like in air cards, smartphones and Apple iPad.

It also offers fastest time to market and the lowest cost alternative for fixed-line operators, cable operators, and tower companies involved in building high capacity metro Ethernet backhaul and access networks, said company sources.

In a release Michael Howard (News - Alert), principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics said, “Mobile backhaul transport networks are in transition. In yesterday’s 2G networks, most cell sites got by with 1 or 2 T1/E1 lines to backhaul voice and SMS traffic.”

He explained that in order to support 3G and 4G services, cell sites will require up to 300 megabits per-second of backhaul capacity to support subscriber demand. The only way to deliver the promised 10+ megabits per-second of bandwidth to each user is to split the RAN infrastructure into much smaller cells. Each of these cells will now need a new high capacity backhaul connection.

“We’ve been impressed with the many dimensions of flexibility in Exalt products and expect that operators will want to evaluate ExploreAir systems, which are designed to solve small cell and other backhaul bottlenecks,” Michael remarked.

The first ExploreAir systems will support world frequency bands from 2 to 40 GHz in a compact, lightweight all-outdoor configuration. Company sources added that these zero-footprint systems include errorless and jitterless adaptive modulation with integrated QoS. This extends link distance, reduces antenna size, and dynamically allocates priority to TDM and IP traffic on the same link thereby reducing overall CAPEX costs.

Exalt’s field-replaceable diplexer technology is featured by the system. This enables zero lead-time and allows single-unit sparing for an entire band for reducing the cost of spares by 50 percent to 90 percent compared to split-mount or other all-outdoor systems.

Amir Zoufonoun (News - Alert), CEO of Exalt Communications said, “New high capacity applications, including the thousands now available on smartphones and other devices, are exhausting network capacity.”

He added that operators are desirous of providing a high level of service but the cost of new equipment makes this prohibitive. Exalt’s ExploreAir is a pay-as-you-grow solution that delivers future-proof backhaul functionality with gigabit Ethernet capacity, which also reduces operating costs to support both legacy TDM and new IP applications over the same network.
