Entone Enables Multi-Stream Janus IP Video Gateway in Europe

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Entone, Inc. will release its multi-stream Janus IP Video Gateway (News - Alert) at the IBC show in Amsterdam next week. Entone is a provider of IPTV home connectivity solutions that enable the delivery of IP television (IPTV) services.

Janus is backboned by Hydra IP Video Gateway solutions. By leveraging existing in-home coax cabling, the Hydra offers consumers the ability to share electronics across multiple televisions, thus eliminating the need for multiple set-top boxes and new home wiring. Hydra can be shared by up to six televisions with any three of them receiving independent, simultaneous video streams. It supports both SD (480i/480p) and HD (720p/1080i/1080p) signals, as well as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (AVC/H.264), and VC-1 compression formats.

On the other hand, Janus supports simultaneous decoding of multiple video streams, both in high-definition (HD) and standard definition (SD). Its gateway is connected to a primary television set via a wide variety of cabling options, such as HDMI or SCART, and distributes video to other television sets in the home over a flexible variety of in-home networking options, including coax, Ethernet, phone lines, power line, and wireless (802.11n). Its IP Video Gateway is its dual DVB-T tuner for digital terrestrial broadcasting reception and provides multiple storage capacity options for whole-home DVR capabilities.

According to Entone (News - Alert), it has developed this version of the Janus gateway keeping its European viewers in mind. It helps the operators to provide multi-TV homes with a single gateway device rather than requiring a collection of networked set-top boxes. It supports a customer self-installation model that is critical to European operators. With its flexible networking options, Janus is ideal for DSL and FTTH deployments.

"In developing the Janus gateway, we worked closely with the European operators to make sure we addressed their key needs and challenges," states Mark Evensen, VP of product development at Entone. "We heard loud and clear that the operators needed a solution for multiple television homes without requiring a home full of set-top boxes. We also understood the need for a hybrid DVB-T/IP support, and the ability for customers to self-install the solution in their homes."

Officials from Entone confirm that Janus supports full digital video recording capabilities, such as forward, rewind, and pause. It offers a modular DVR with storage capacity.

A live demonstration of the Entone Janus IP video gateway can be seen at IBC in Amsterdam at the Entone stand (IPTV (News - Alert) ZONE IP-333).

Entone was established in 1999 and is headquartered in California, with offices in Hong Kong. The company is backed by leading venture capital firms such as Menlo Ventures (News - Alert) and Scale Venture Partners.
