For Added Protection, snom's IP phones Now Work with Borderware's SIPassure VoIP Gateway

By Patrick Barnard, TMCnet Assignment Editor

VoIP phone maker snom technology announced today that its SIP-based products now work with BorderWare Technologies’ SIPassure VoIP Security Gateway. That means customers with snom IP phones can now get additional security for privacy and corporate compliance.

Although all snom phones come with SRTP and TLS to protect against eavesdropping, this functionality has traditionally been delivered via a PBX. With BorderWare’s SIPassure, however, this is no longer necessary, as it combines the functionality of an Application Layer Gateway (News - Alert) with the benefits of a Session Border Controller. Using NAT (Network Address Translation) and SIPassure’s ability to provide Far-end NAT Traversal services, it is also possible to use SIP services on a network that is protected by a firewall.

SIPassure protects against application specific attacks such as registry attacks and spits, as well as floods of unsolicited calls or messages (i.e. denial of service attacks). With this new, combined solution, the phone’s user can see whether security is “on” or not – and thus know whether or not the call is “secure.” Furthermore, it can help protect against service theft, call hijacking and other disturbing “phenomena” which are inherent in IP communications.

According to a company press release, all of snom’s phones - from the entry-level snom 300 to the newest snom 370 - now work with the SIPassure VoIP Security Gateway.

Dr. Michael Knieling, marketing and sales director of snom, said combining snom’s phones with BorderWare’s SIPassure solution results in “the most secure Voice-over-IP solution currently available to VoIP telephony providers, ISPs, administrators and VoIP users.”

“The snom and BorderWare partnership creates the technological and practical requirements for being able to take advantage of the benefits of VoIP without the risks,” said Peter Cox (News - Alert), CTO international, BorderWare, in the release. “SIPassure has been designed to be scalable at a low cost for both end user companies and network providers and offers a secure VoIP connection for every user.”
