Voxeo Releases Prophecy 10: The Unlocked Communications Platform

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

The release of Prophecy 10 from Voxeo, its flagship Unlocked Communications platform, is expected to provide enterprises and service providers with a new level of capability in managing unified communications and self-service applications.

The platform is focused on multiplying application value, while assuring solution interoperability and destroying vendor lock-in, according to the company.

"By enabling multi-channel self-service with no additional development costs, Prophecy 10 can 'multiply the ROI' of any enterprise voice self-service investment,"  said Jonathan Taylor, CEO of Voxeo, who noted that Voxeo (News - Alert) enables enterprises to reduce the cost and complexity of voice application delivery.

The latest Prophecy is designed to run multi-channel interactions, while leveraging VoiceXML IVR applications to interact with users via voice, as well as SMS, IM, Twitter, Web chat and the mobile Web.

This, says Taylor, can ultimately maximize return on voice application investments.

Take for example the case of any a pre-existing VoiceXML-based order status application. In the past, thee order status was generally limited based on the platform modifications. However, Prophecy 10 allows users to  answer order status questions via SMS or IM without any form of modification.

Prophecy 10’s scalable SIP server foundation is compliant with over 30 Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF),  IP Multimedia Subsystem and SIP standards. In addition it works with various VoIP solutions and services, according to the company, as well as with SIP platforms and services from AT&T, Avaya, Cisco, Digium/Asterisk, Global Crossing (News - Alert), Nortel, Verizon and over 40 other companies.

The overall effect of this platform diversity is helping Prophecy bridge SIP services and devices, eases integration with IP-PBX (News - Alert) and call center investments, and lowers the cost of connecting and transferring calls with direct IP connectivity.

As for the nagging issue of vendor lock-in, the increasing use proprietary features and application development tools are creating to new era of IVR lock-in. And in turn, Prophecy is the only platform to pass 100 percent of the VoiceXML Forum compliance test suite. This means its VoiceXML compatibility modes make porting VoiceXML IVR applications “as easy as changing a single Prophecy setting,” Taylor said.

Perhaps the most important functionality to come from Prophecy 10 is its ability to bundle the capabilities of VoiceObjects Analyzer that enables customers to build applications once and deploy them on over 30 different VoiceXML platforms.

"VoiceObjects (News - Alert) Analyzer fits very well in the context of the Unlocked Communications Platform," said Dan Miller, senior analyst at Opus Research. "Deployment of communications applications in open environments cries out for flexible monitoring and reporting resources that recognize and log problems in real time and support rapid remediation."

In fact, the platform recently received the highest scores in all categories of the Opus Research report on "Analytics and Reporting for Phone-Based Self-Service." The report said Prophecy 10 delivers 15 built-in VoiceObjects Analyzer reports for any existing VoiceXML application.

In addition, enterprises can access 30 additional reports by adding analytics notations to existing VoiceXML applications. VoiceObjects Analyzer also integrates with business intelligence, BI, solutions from SAP BusinessObjects, IBM (News - Alert) Cognos and Microstrategy.

Other features include:

Prophecy 10 can run up to 100 concurrent calls on power-sipping Intel (News - Alert) Atom based servers, and up to 500 calls on a typical Windows Linux, or Mac OS X server.

  • Prophecy 10 includes separate developer and deployment modes that significantly reduce the memory and CPU overhead of a Prophecy installation.
  • Prophecy 10 uniquely includes support for intelligent speech transcription products and services from Nuance, PhoneTag, SpinVox, Yap, and Vlingo.
  • Prophecy supports advanced call control via both the W3C (News - Alert) CCXML and Java SIP Servlet standards.
  • Platform resources can be logically separated, aggregated, or virtualized to partition customers or applications on a single server.
  • Prophecy 10 includes free US English ASR and Text-To-Speech (TTS) engines and supports more than 30 additional language engines from Cepstral (News - Alert), IBM, Loquendo, LumenVox, Microsoft, Nuance and Telisma.

The company made the announcement at SpeechTEK in New York City and is scheduled  to demonstrate a 2,000 port (phone line) Prophecy 10 cluster of 20 Acer (News - Alert) Aspire netbooks.  The event is Aug. 24 to Aug. 26, 2009 at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan.
