Device Management and Other Factors in the Wireless Communications Market

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

The explosion of the wireless services market is having an impact not only on operators, but also on the companies that service operators. One case-in-point is Alepo (News - Alert), a provider of IT and related solutions for communications carriers.

For the first 15 years of its life, Alepo focused most of its attention on the data market, primarily internet service providers (ISPs). In the past five years or so, that focus has shifted to wireless carriers.

In a recent TMCnet video interview, Jonathan Garini, Alepo’s vice president of Products, said the company is still putting its resources into data-related solutions, but what that looks like has changed. With growth of smartphones and tablets, there is a lot of interest in machine-to-machine, data pass, and device management products.

Mobile operators like Digicel are looking for ways to introduce 4G services using 2.5G infrastructure. There is also growth in mobile operators wanting to launch WiFi (News - Alert) hotspots that offer a seamless experience for users.

Device management is a huge part of all this.

“We have a special pain medicine when it comes to device management solutions,” Garini noted in the interview. “Our platform allows operators to solve customer problems over the air.”

The problems Garini speaks of are things like configuration fixes and firmware upgrades that customers previously could only get by visiting a brick-and-mortar support center and waiting in line for a technician. Now, they can get what they need using local device management tools.

“This makes customers happier, and reduces cost for technical support,” Garini said.

Alepo does more than enable easier standard technical support, though. The company also helps with more complex problem solving, and new types of services.

“The more sophisticated devices become, the more problems you may have,” Garini noted. “The surge in mobile devices, especially tablets, creates a need for innovative data plans. We provide the platform that makes that possible.”

Garini predicts that, given how data services are evolving, voice-over-LTE (News - Alert) will be one of the next big things. A lot is already happening behind the scenes around this, which consumers are largely unaware of. The potential growth for supporting this evolution depends on the market and what problem needs to be solved.

For tablets and other devices in the developed world, device management is huge. In developing countries, innovative services for connecting WiFi into 3G is more likely to be the focus.
