NSN Introduces New NFV Telco Cloud Solutions

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

Nokia (News - Alert) Solutions and Networks has a new offering based on network functions virtualization called Telco Cloud Management, which includes the NetAct operations support system and the Cloud Application Manager. The company is also promoting its professional services for telcos looking to embrace cloud architectures.

The NetAct OSS can be used to manage virtualized and non-virtualized network elements. The Cloud Application Manager, as its name suggests, was designed to manage applications in the telco cloud. It does so in a largely an automated and elastic way.

This is important because it gives network operators the ability to control the customer experience under any traffic conditions, and enables telcos to bring services to market more quickly.

This latest news from NSN follows the company’s telco cloud effort involving core virtualization and the company’s Liquid Core solution, which it introduced in 2011. SK Telecom (News - Alert) of Korea late last year finished a trial leveraging this solution to fully virtualize its evolved packet core architecture on the cloud. The carrier is working with the solution, which is leverages Intel (News - Alert) 8086 processor technology, to allow for more effective network scaling. According to NSN, 1gbps per user per day can be supported as a result.

“We have proven the future is in the cloud,” says Michael Clever, senior vice president of core at NSN.

This demonstrates that mobile edge computing can transform the delivery of mobile broadband content and enable a customized experience for mobile subscribers, said Dirk Lindemeier, head of Liquid Net at Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert).

“We are pleased to be working closely with our longstanding partner NSN on this proof-of-concept project. With Liquid Applications, we expect to create an enriched service-aware RAN environment that brings greater benefits to our customers through intelligent and personalized services,” said Choi Jin-sung, executive vice president and head of ICT R&D Center of SK Telecom.
