Sorrento Networks CEO to Present IPTV and Triple Play Session at ITEXPO

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

The IPTV (News - Alert) and Triple Play markets have received a lot of attention lately as costs of implementing a low-cost broadcast optical IPTV backbone have declined with advancing technologies.

Implementation is just one of the subjects Sorrento Networks CEO Jim Nevelle will cover next week as he presents a timely session titled “IPTV & Triple Play (News - Alert) Network Migration” at TMC’s INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO East 2009 in Miami.

“The bandwidth requirements for IPTV are much greater than for carrier-class VoIP telephony, necessitating more bandwidth-efficient IPTV protocols, such as IP multicasting,” said Nevelle. “However, finance departments often balk at the high costs of obtaining this bandwidth efficiency.”

While IPTV is still in a relative infancy phase, it is nonetheless providing opportunities for service providers to deliver video content over VDSL and PON-based access networks. However, this is presenting significant challenges, as IP-based video services are even more sensitive to network impairments than Voice over IP.

“My goal with this presentation is to teach attendees ways to implement a low-cost broadcast optical IPTV backbone that offers a high QoS and meets all other triple play requirements, which should be timely from both technological and economical perspectives,” said Nevelle.

The session will take place at 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 2, 2009 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

“We are very pleased that Jim Nevelle will be participating in this year’s show. Sorrento Networks is widely recognized and respected as an industry leader, and I am confident that our attendees will appreciate and value the opportunity to hear his perspective on implementing lower-cost IPTV architectures,” said TMC (News - Alert) president and conference chairman, Rich Tehrani.

INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO, held Feb. 2-4, 2009, is the world’s largest and best-attended IP Communications trade show. At the 2008 East Coast event, the show drew over 7,000 buyers and sellers of IP communications products and services. The show in January will mark the 10th anniversary and be the 19th INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO, and TMC once again projects total attendance to exceed 7,000.

“Over the past twelve months, widespread deployment of IP Communications services by global service providers, businesses and governments has reinforced that this exciting technology is a viable, cost-effective communications solution. As a result, we are seeing a significant number of senior-level executives attending INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO as a means of learning about the technology so they too can take advantage of its benefits.”
